Kingston short course

So recently I've been away in Kingston, I did a short portfolio prep course at Kingston uni which was reallyy good actually. Did a lot of drawingg, life drawing in particular, some illustration, and some colour block interpretation of objects. On the second day we did some life drawing of a friend of the teachers, he was wearing a christmas jumper and we had to make the jumper look as good as we could as well as the rest of the person ofcourse.. Well anywayy, I won the competition! The model chose the winner, he said that I made the jumper look heavy and you could really see the texture within the jumper. Still need to take photo's of these so I'll do a post on the photo's as it is Christmas eve today! However I do have photo's of the 3D object we made from a book. Basically the project brief was to create a 3D paper structure from the book we chose, about the book. We could use only the book pages and white card if we covered it in the book pages. I chose the book "The Golden compass" I havent personally read the book, but I have seen the film, and I decided to create something which intertwined the compass (being the very core of the book) the polar bear, and the journey to the north. I really enjoyed this exercise as 3D isnt really my thing and it gave the chance to step out of my comfort zone and create something really rather exciting and ultimately.. it tells the story with the sculpture.
This photo is taken near the start of creating my book sculpture, I wanted to cover the inside with these dark illustrations so that the compass would stand out more and really stand up from the background. I created this shape for the mouth by stapling the edges together in the shape of a polar bear mouth.

I sewed a piece of thread to hold the edges of the mouth closer together so it was shaped more like a polar bear mouth rather than a shark mouth, this worked really well, it held well and was difficult to see.
The compass inside of the mouth, I showed the North by cutting out letters from the book, and stuck them in place. As you can see "The Golden compass" is written in gold, and it goes in a jaggered line from south to north to show the journey that they made in the book.
The layre on the top of the compass represent the armour that the polar bear wore in the book.

If I was to do this project again, I would cut out more illustrations to stick on the inside so that the compass would stand out more, however I would have done this if there was enough illustrations in the book! so i would have to create the darkness somehow else.

Ps, Christmas Day tomorrow! SO EXCITED.

Folio folio PORTFOLIOOO

As You can tell by the title of the post, portfolio's is pretty much it at the moment, I've been putting together the last few pages tonightt, but still need to do a few more sheets as I need to do some photoshoots etc before I can let it be marked on wednesdayyyyy :)
Well lasty night and the night before I baby sat for a family just down the road from me, ohhww they have cats and I'm soooo allergic its awful! They came home one night and my right eye was like the size of a tennis ball! It was horrendous!, but anywayy, so I've been babysitting, and I've had a bit of time to do some fashion designs for a project we did in the btec first, it was a recycled fashion project, and I picked out of a hat the item 'cape' and the object 'plastic cups'. I loved this project so muchhh! And this just one of the designs which I've done, this is how the cape actually turned out when I made it, but I will be posting more alternative designs of different 'plastic cup capes' very soon! I just need to crack on with some! :D

Viktor &Rolf spring/Summer 2010 collection

Umbrella dress

Sooo I began to create my Umbrella dress... made a few designs, and have started cutting some umbrellas and sewing them together etc etc... (note to self.. BUY SOME PLIERS.. my poor fingers are bruised from cutting metal with normal scissors!) First of all I cut up 4 umbrallas so that I can sew them all together in a circle because I need to fit a body in the middle of them! Although they are not painted now or decorated etc, I spoke to Gayle (teacher) and she said that this project is about creating a good photoshoot as the outcome, so it depends if I have time to decorate them, as its not essential for the project.
I have been looking a lot at Viktor & Rolfe : Cut up couture, it is so beautiful and very cleverly thought out as they don't actually cut holes in the material, they create it like this from the start, and I think that i may do something similar to this in my umbrella dress. Need to buy a lot more umbrellas though!! :O bye bye money..

Brighton

Brighton fridayyy! For the MADE craft fair.
Even though it wasn't really about fashion it was really good to see how people had set up their stalls, because at the end of the year we're going to be setting up our projects, and I quite like the simplicity of many of the stalls as some of them looked a little over-crowded and it was difficult to see what they were actually selling.
I managed to take a few photo's of some peoples work who really inspired me and whose layout I really likes.
The lady that made these watches was inspired by people who look at their phones in stead of their watches, and she wanted to create these watches to get people into wearing them again, perhaps for fashion and not for the purpose they were made for.

I really like the idea of these watches as I love watches, and I have many of my own which i wear, and none of them work, I wear them for fashion instead of their purpose, so this is what she has created by these watches.

I took photo's of these nacklaces as I really like the layering effect and thought I could use this effect when creating my umbrella inspired dress. I also really like the layout and will deffinitely use wall space when creating my own set up for my final project.

Westminster

Went to Westminster on thursday to look round the uni! It's soo lovelyy! Really like the course and the teachers, only down side is the facilisties because they are temporary.. however they are really nice aswell! We looked round the permanent first year facilities and they look very spacious which is really good compared to some other uni's.
I like how their students develop their own touch of their own fashion, not like some uni's who make them focus on 'sportswear' for example
So all in all... THUMBS UPPP. :D

Umbrella's

So apparently umbrella's are linked to movement.. through spinning tops.. through spider webs.. through the spider moving.. ? But anyway we have a project on umbrella's and we have to design an umbrella.. but I'm feeling naughty so I'm going to change mine into a garment.. and I found the perfect inspiration.. A dutch fashion designer called Bas Koster. He made a dress made from entirely umbrellas, I love how the dress just hangs and looks like beautiful ruffles of material. Although umbrella's are not the most slimming piece of.. 'clothing' there is.. I feel that Koster has used dark colours on top and brighter colours towards the bottom to stay away from swallowing up the model in the heaps of umbrellas.

I have started designing a few umbrella inspired dresses, and will upload them when they are fully accomplished and actually make sense to not only you, but me! haha

Amsterdam and AMFI

Oh my goshh it was amazinggggg! Amsterdam is such a beautiful city, although a little expensive, it is full of fashion and I love ittttt!

Mum and i went to look round the fashion institute in amsterdam, and it was reallyy bigg, unfortunately I didnt get any photo's of it, we were in a little bit of a hurry as we ended back in same place about 5 times trying to find it! Nevertheless, the course structure is so good! And compared to St Martins, (whose open day I went to yesterday) who have 20 minutes tutor time a week, amfi has around 26 hours! So it's excellent for one on one time. Although the course is 4 years, the first year is similar to foundation, and I think this will help me to realise what I really want to specialise in. The teachers seem lovelyy, and the course structure is wonderful.
Night life and everything is sooooooo cool and wonderful! The only down side is that it is SO expensive out there! :( But this doesnt put me off ;) I'm just going to have to work soo hard !

enjoyy picsssss :)

Took us ages to find the right tram!
